I dropped out of high school at age 16. I traveled the country during my teen years, beating on my craft by writing, taking photos and editing videos. I went to community college for one semester, I dropped out again. My insatiable drive to create and learn by doing was not being harnessed in a classroom setting. I worked construction jobs until I saved enough money to fly off to New York or take the bus to Chicago to cover events of all kinds.
I loved the process.
I began covering local sports events at age 19. I wasn't paid, I created game stories and videos because I wanted to impact the way sports were covered and uplift the athletes that I wrote about. A distinguished sports editor named Eric Grover reached out to me and brought me onto the Wahpeton Daily News team as a sports stringer. I earned $25 per article, often spending several weeks without submitting my stories to payroll.
I loved the process.
My newspaper stint was ended when a bad streak of health led to my then editor asking me to turn in my keys. I thought I'd never see the inside of a professional newsroom again. Over the next decade I continued to build my Breckenridge-Wahpeton sports outlet, Breck Sports Talk, relying on only the generosity of readers and the shared vision to build sports culture in our community. My content was featured on SportsCenter and many regional news stations. I lived in dilapidated apartments and rode a moped from game to game until there was too much snow to do so.
I loved the process.
In 2021, the wonderful team at Wahpeton Daily News reached out to me and asked if I was looking for a job in sports writing. The rest is history. I went on to break the mold of what it means to be a newspaper, publishing unique sports content and bringing multimedia to the forefront of our operation. I was fortunate to work for a company that allowed me the freedom to innovate. InDesign, Photoshop, publishing systems — it was all a grand opportunity. I taught myself how to harness these systems, while handling pagination and product development. The experience was amazing.
Now, my latest endeavor with i3G Media began in January 2024. I know it's going to be a fulfilling journey.
Because I love the process.
